“Women hold up half the sky!”
My parents witnessed an era when Chinese people chanted these words by Mao. They told me about it. Growing up I’ve believed in that women are the on front line of every social function, until I’m old enough to realize that I was only exposed to certain options and paths that would lead to a “desired” life — a stable job, a resourceful lifestyle, and so on — which does not promise fulfillment or happiness.
Can you become someone without ever imagining about it? Think about that classmate/neighbor/someone’s child who determined to become a doctor/lawyer/engineer and actually became one. You are not like that. And that’s Ok. The stories are more fun this way.😼
I want to show you. This is a series about Asian women who took an untraditional path on their career, and what they learned from it.
Here goes the “Half of Sky” series.
Ep 4. We Founded A Company To Design Sound For Games
Continuing from last episode, and joined by Gwen Guo, co-founder of IMBA Interactive, we come to learn how these two music lovers (one of them claims to be a fan of "cheesy" music!) came to build this unique studio in Singapore, and what they had to go through to survive as a business.
Ep 3. I Became A Game Composer After Quitting Fashion Design
Sharon Kho is the co-founder and Lead Composer of IMBA Interactive, the only dedicated game audio company in Singapore.
Ep 2. I Have Nothing To Lose Because I’m New
Vivi Hu moved to New York with her Jazz dream and…well…zero connection four years ago. Now she is a Jazz singer and leads her own band, how did she do that?
Ep 1. Belonging Nowhere Makes Me Who I AM
At a very young age, Junwei Lin left her home country China and went for study in UK, Australia, and US. She lived in a life where one gets a daily dose of culture shock. She wondered who she is, like many others. What’s special of her journey is she turned all these experience into her inspiration of design.
🙋♀️A final thought
I often find this funny contrast between how we imagined our life to be:
vs. how it actually turned out:
